Itinerary

Fly to Salta and stay at the boutique Legado Mitico Hotel. Explore the colonial centre with time to relax afterwards. (B)

Travel north to San Antonio de los Cobres and the elevated Central Andean plateau called puna. Take a stop to see the red clay dunes of the Labyrinth desert and spend 2 nights at Tolar Grande. This small settlement is set on the edge of the Arizaro salt flat, a giant depression surrounded by a chain of volcanoes. (B, L, D)

Explore the surroundings of Tolar Grande including the turquoise Ojos del Mar lagoons and the old ghost railway station of Caipe. (B, L, D)

Cross the crusty surface of the salt flat and marvel at the perfect cone of the Arita volcano. Drive through stunning scenery of barren mountains, lava strips, tiny oasis communities and green patches where llamas, suris (Andean ostrich) and vicuñas graze. Spend 2 nights at Hosteria de Altura El Peñon. (B, L, D)

Morning visit to the stunning labyrinth of bizarre pumice stone rocks. In the afternoon, drive to the Laguna Grande, a high Andean sanctuary for thousands of flamingoes. (B, L, D)

Travel back to Salta via the delightful town of Cafayate and the impressive Las Conchas gorge. An option is available to visit the Quilmes pre-Inca ruins en route. Stay overnight at Finca Valentina, a charming white-washed country house on the outskirts of Salta, and relax in the gardens or by the pool before your onward flight. (B)
