Highlights

  • Start in the city known as the 'Gateway to the Arctic', Tromso, the starting point for many polar expeditions and the world's northernmost university town, before heading north through a land of dramatic fjords and mountains to the most northerly point in Europe, the North Cape. Known as one of northern Scandinavia's most popular tourist attractions, the cape has a 307-metre high cliff with a large flat plateau on top where visitors can stand and watch the midnight sun or take in views of the Barents Sea to the north. This 10-day / 9-night self-drive itinerary passes through stunning landscapes with small villages and isolated towns rich in history both ancient and modern. Travel through the summer-warmed arctic before returning to Tromso for your flight to next destination.

Itinerary

Fly to Tromso. On arrival in Tromso, pick up your hire car and drive into the city centre. Later today, explore Tromso on foot or via public transport. Recommended sites include the Arctic Cathedral, various museums and a short trip on the cable car up Storsteinen Mountain. Stay overnight at the Thon Hotel Tromso (or similar).

Today after breakfast, leave Tromso and drive south to Harstad, the capital of the Vesterlalen islands and a good base for exploring the archipelago. Stay overnight at the Thon Hotel Harstad (or similar). (B)

This morning, leave Harstad and continue south towards the Lofoton islands. Drive to Sortland and continue by ferry from Melbu to Fiskebol and the beginning of the Lofotons. With towering, pointed mountain peaks rising to heights of almost 1,000 metres, the Lofotons are known for their breathtaking scenery. Stay overnight at the Thon Hotel Lofoten (or similar). (B)

The drive today heads east crossing both the Vestfjorden and Lysfjordens with the latter home to a big colony of killer whales. On arrival in Narvik, we recommend a visit to the Ofoten museum and taking the cable car to the top of the 1,200-metre Fagernes Mountain. Stay overnight at the Quality Hotel Grand Royal (or similar). (B)

After breakfast, depart your hotel and drive north along the shores of the impressive Lyngen fjord on up into the Arctic and Sorkjosen. Stay overnight at the Reisafjord Hotel (or similar). (B)

Today, continue to Hammerfest where we recommend a visit to the Museum of Reconstruction with exhibits relating to the history and culture of the Finnmark region. Visitors can walk through an authentic refugee cave among other exhibits. Stay overnight at the Thon Hotel Hammerfest (or similar). (B)

This morning after breakfast, depart and drive along the shores of Porsangen fjord to the North Cape, the most northerly point in Europe and possibly view the midnight sun over the Arctic Ocean. Recommended is a visit to the Nordkapphallen for an exhibition and presentation on the North Cape. Please note it is necessary to pay entrance to Nordkapphallen in order to visit the end point of the North Cape anyway. Stay overnight at the Scandic Hotel Nordkapp (or similar). (B)

The drive today turns south towards Alta with a possible diversion through Lakselv or the Stabbursdalen National Park en route. In Alta, we recommend a visit to the Rock Art of Alta exhibition, a Unesco world heritage site. Stay overnight at the Thon Hotel Alta (or similar). (B)

Today after breakfast, return to Tromso via Olderdalen, crossing the Lyngen fjord by ferry to Lyngseidet and then by ferry between Svensby and Breivikeidet. On arrival in Tromso, stay overnight at the Thon Hotel Tromso (or similar). (B)

This morning, drive to the airport and return your rental car to the relevant drop off point at the airport before your flight to next destination. (B)
