Day 1 : To Reykjavik
Afternoon flight to Keflavik. Transfer from the airport to Reykjavik and stay overnight at the Hotel Reykjavik Natura (or similar).
Day 2 : To Westman Islands
This morning, head back along the south coast to Landeyjarhofn harbour and make the 30-minute crossing to the Westman Islands. Explore the main Heimaey island, visit the puffin colonies at Storhofadi and walk up the Eldfell volcano crater. Visit Eldheimar Museum and explore the lava field. Lunch at leisure. Continue to the Westman Hotel for overnight stay. (B)
: If the route to the Westman Islands is closed due to weather conditions (spring or early summer), the tour will continue along the south coast through the lava fields and outwash sands formed by floods from the Katla volcano, one of the largest volcanoes on the island, and onwards to Laugarvatn.
Day 3 : To Vik
This morning after breakfast, depart by ferry to Landeyjahofn harbour and continue to Vik via the Thoraldseyri Farm, which houses an exhibition of photos and films chronicling the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull glacier. Further along Route 1 are the Skogar waterfalls and Folk Museum, where the first wooden house in Iceland can be visited, built entirely of driftwood. Stay 2 nights at the Hotel Dyrholaey (or similar). (B, D)
Day 4 : Around Vik
Drive via the village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur to Skaftafell National Park, part of Iceland's largest and best-known national park. Visit the Vatnajokull glacier, Europe's largest glacier, and the Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon, which was created by the meltwater from the nearby Breidamerkurjökull glacier. Optional excursion out on to the lagoon via boat. Return to Vik and stay overnight. (B, D)
Day 5 : To Reykjavik
Today, return to Reykjavik stopping at points of interest en-route via Iceland's Golden Circle. The day begins with a visit to the geothermal area of Haukadalur, known for the geysers of Stokkur and Geysir and the thundering Gullfoss waterfalls. You will then retrace your steps to the Thingvellir National Park and see the site of the world's oldest parliament and the meeting point of the North American and European tectonic plates. Continue to Reykjavik and stay overnight at the Hotel Reykjavik Natura (or similar). (B)
Day 6 : Departure
Early morning transfer to Keflavik airport for your flight to your next destination. (B)
